Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level extension is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained active.
